Death threat for Carlos

By Gail Alexander

Two bullets for UNC MP Carlos John and one each for his relatives. That was the promise in a death threat note which John received on Tuesday.

John’s response was to accuse the PNM Government of resorting to “terror tactics”.

Yesterday, John met with Police Commissioner Hilton Guy to turn over the note and a photo, which he said he received in the mail.

They were sent to the UNC’s Rienzi Complex office in a brown envelope.

The photo, apparently cut out of a newspaper published on August 4, shows John with business magnate Issa Nicholas at the wedding of Nicholas’ son Atef on August 3.

Red ink marks have been drawn over John’s head and heart.

The note, handwritten in red capital letters, reads:

“TWO BULLETS FOR YOU AND ONE FOR EACH FOR (sic) YOUR REALATIVES (sic) YOU CAN RUN BUT YOU CAN’T HIDE THE COUNTDOWN START.

John said he thought the envelope contained ordinary mail, since, he said, a lot of mail for MPs was sent to Rienzi Complex.

After opening it and discovering what was inside, he said, he gave a statement to Asst Commissioner in charge of Crime Frank Diaz. The police took the note and the photo for fingerprinting and further investigations.

“This has added a new dimension to the politics. I suppose the Government is probably resorting to terror tactics because they’re not confident they will win the next election and they hope, through this medium, prospective UNC candidates may not be inclined to fight the election. It’s tantamount to an act of intimidation,” John said.

Asked if this would reinforce or change his recent decision against contesting the St Joseph seat, John said he has discussed the death threat with his family.

“The family position against me contesting still stands,” he said.

Contacted yesterday, Diaz said he could not comment on the issue.
