Borrowing a thought from the discussion lower down and having observed the conduct of some Indians myself, it is difficult for Trinidad and Tobago to develop as a cohesive nation when a large part of the population feels that being Indian automatically gives them a superior advantage over Africans.
The Maha Sabha, one of the leading Indian organizations in Trinidad, preaches a type of racism, and the leader of that organization Sat Maharaj, can be remembered for one of his infamous statements. The statement was to the effect that if his daughter marries an African he would disown her.
Although there are Indian and African marriages in Trinidad, this practice is disliked by the Hindu community and their 'reason' has something to do with racial purity. Any comments on this?
