{"id":8643,"date":"2015-02-22T12:19:33","date_gmt":"2015-02-22T16:19:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.trinidadandtobagonews.com\/blog\/?p=8643"},"modified":"2015-02-22T12:19:33","modified_gmt":"2015-02-22T16:19:33","slug":"decriminalise-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.trinidadandtobagonews.com\/blog\/?p=8643","title":{"rendered":"Decriminalise it"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><I>By Julien Neaves<br \/>\nFebruary 22, 2015 &#8211; <A HREF=\"http:\/\/www.newsday.co.tt\/news\/0,207296.html\">newsday.co.tt<\/A><\/I><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.trinidadandtobagonews.com\/blog\/?tag=marijuana\"><img src='http:\/\/www.trinidadandtobagonews.com\/blogimg\/marijuana.jpg' width='150' height='100' border='0' class='alignleft' alt='Marijuana' \/><\/a>WITH Caribbean neighbour Jamaica making moves to decriminalise marijuana University of the West Indies (UWI) Professor Emeritus Kenneth Ramchand is renewing his calls for marijuana to be decriminalised in Trinidad and Tobago for medicinal purposes.<\/p>\n<p>In January this year the Jamaican Government tabled the Dangerous Drugs (Amendment) Act, 2015 in that country\u2019s Senate to decriminalise marijuana for medicinal, religious and personal use.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nRamchand, in an interview with Sunday Newsday, said that TT \u201cshould absolutely decriminalise marijuana for medical purposes\u201d and pointed to a good argument for decriminalising for personal use in limited quantities. He stressed that for purposes of personal use, the key term was \u201climited quantities\u201d and people should not be allowed to walk around with \u201c40 marijuana cigarettes\u201d or such quantities as might suggest they were selling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am pretty certain we will get to the point of decriminalisation for medicinal purposes. I think we are getting there,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>In August 2000, Ramchand, then an Independent Senator and UWI lecturer, called for marijuana to be decriminalised for medical purposes in his contribution to debate on the Dangerous Drugs Amendment Bill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, all those marijuana fields we are burning now, we should seize them, compress the marijuana, start to process it and since we have to do what America says, when they de-criminalise, \u2018buss\u2019 the market,\u201d he had said.<\/p>\n<p>In the United States, 23 of the 50 States have legalised marijuana for medical use and three states \u2014 Oregon, Washington and Colorado \u2014 have legalised the drug for recreational use.<br \/>\n<B><A HREF=\"http:\/\/www.newsday.co.tt\/news\/0,207296.html\">Full Article : newsday.co.tt<\/A><\/B><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Julien Neaves February 22, 2015 &#8211; newsday.co.tt WITH Caribbean neighbour Jamaica making moves to decriminalise marijuana University of the West Indies (UWI) Professor Emeritus Kenneth Ramchand is renewing his calls for marijuana to be decriminalised in Trinidad and Tobago for medicinal purposes.
