{"id":8476,"date":"2014-11-07T09:35:31","date_gmt":"2014-11-07T13:35:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.trinidadandtobagonews.com\/blog\/?p=8476"},"modified":"2014-11-07T09:36:15","modified_gmt":"2014-11-07T13:36:15","slug":"dumas-daly-question-presidents-28000-monthly-housing-allowance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.trinidadandtobagonews.com\/blog\/?p=8476","title":{"rendered":"Dumas, Daly question President&#8217;s $28,000 monthly housing allowance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><B>GIVE IT BACK<\/B><\/p>\n<p><em>By Ria Taitt<br \/>\nNovember 07, 2014 &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.trinidadexpress.com\/news\/GIVE-IT-BACK--281874951.html\">trinidadexpress.com<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.trinidadandtobagonews.com\/blog\/?tag=anthony-carmona\"><img src='http:\/\/www.trinidadandtobagonews.com\/blogimg\/acarmona.jpg' width='150' height='100' border='0' class='alignleft' alt='President Anthony Carmona' \/><\/a>Senior counsel Martin Daly has questioned the legal basis on which the Chief Personnel Officer granted approval for the payment of a tax-free $28,000 housing allowance for President Anthony Carmona.<\/p>\n<p>And former head of the Public Service Reginald Dumas stated yesterday that it would be \u201cethically reprehensible\u201d if President Carmona is indeed living in State-provided accommodation, while at the same time receiving a housing allowance.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\n\u201cIf that is so, then he should give back the money,\u201d Dumas asserted.<\/p>\n<p>If President Carmona has received the housing allowance since assuming office in March 2013, he would have, to date, received in excess of $500,000 tax-free.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs far as I am concerned, if the State is providing furnished accommodation, there is really and truly no justification for providing a housing allowance in addition to that,\u201d said Dumas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat would be charging the taxpayers twice and that, to me, is improper and unacceptable,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>In a letter dated July 9, 2013, the CPO stated that \u201cas a principle, where an office holder is provided with accommodation by the State, a housing allowance is not payable for any period during which he\/she is provided with such accommodation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><i>Full Article : <a href=\"http:\/\/www.trinidadexpress.com\/news\/GIVE-IT-BACK--281874951.html\">trinidadexpress.com<\/a><\/i><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>GIVE IT BACK By Ria Taitt November 07, 2014 &#8211; trinidadexpress.com Senior counsel Martin Daly has questioned the legal basis on which the Chief Personnel Officer granted approval for the payment of a tax-free $28,000 housing allowance for President Anthony Carmona.
