{"id":10480,"date":"2017-12-26T14:40:31","date_gmt":"2017-12-26T18:40:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.trinidadandtobagonews.com\/blog\/?p=10480"},"modified":"2017-12-26T14:40:31","modified_gmt":"2017-12-26T18:40:31","slug":"uwi-backs-protests-against-eu-blacklist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.trinidadandtobagonews.com\/blog\/?p=10480","title":{"rendered":"UWI backs protests against EU blacklist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><I>Trinidad &amp; Tobago Guardian<br \/>\nDecember 26, 2017 &#8211; <A HREF=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.tt\/news\/2017-12-26\/uwi-backs-protests-against-eu-blacklist\">guardian.co.tt<\/A><\/I><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.trinidadandtobagonews.com\/blog\/?p=9186\"><img src='http:\/\/www.trinidadandtobagonews.com\/blogimg\/uwi.jpg' class='alignleft' alt='University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, Trinidad Main Administration Building'><\/a>KINGSTON&mdash;The University of the West Indies (UWI) is backing Caribbean Community (Caricom) governments in protesting the European Union\u2019s (EU) recent blacklisting of regional countries it considers tax haven.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement issued, Vice-Chancellor Sir Hilary Beckles said the UWI \u201cstands with the governments of the Caribbean in protesting the recent actions by the EU and calling for a more transparent and equitable regulatory system and joins the call for the EU to enter into a process to resolve the issue.\u201d<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\n\u201cTo this end, The University of the West Indies will continue to put its expertise and research capacity at the service of governments, the private sector and regional organizations to craft appropriate policy responses,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>On December 5, the EU named Barbados, Grenada, St Lucia, and T&#038;T among 17 countries it considers tax havens.
