{"id":10355,"date":"2017-11-21T13:21:22","date_gmt":"2017-11-21T17:21:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.trinidadandtobagonews.com\/blog\/?p=10355"},"modified":"2017-11-21T22:40:03","modified_gmt":"2017-11-22T02:40:03","slug":"what-is-behind-the-military-coup-in-zimbabwe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.trinidadandtobagonews.com\/blog\/?p=10355","title":{"rendered":"What is Behind the Military Coup in Zimbabwe?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Gregory Elich<br \/>\nNovember 21, 2017 &#8211; <A HREF=\"https:\/\/gregoryelich.org\/2017\/11\/20\/what-is-behind-the-military-coup-in-zimbabwe\/\">gregoryelich.org<\/A><\/em> <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.raceandhistory.com\/Zimbabwe\/\"><img src='http:\/\/www.rastafarispeaks.com\/bp\/zim22.jpg' width='115' height='140' border='0' class='alignleft' alt='Zimbabwe Watch' \/><\/a>Long-roiling factional conflict within Zimbabwe\u2019s ruling ZANU-PF political party exploded last week in a military coup that quickly seized control of the government and state media. <\/p>\n<p>The coup was led by Commander of Zimbabwe Defense Forces Constantino Chiwenga, who is closely aligned with former vice president Emmerson Mnangagwa.<\/p>\n<p>Emboldened by President Robert Mugabe\u2019s declining mental sharpness and physical health in recent years, Mnangagwa actively maneuvered to ensure that he would succeed the president. Mnangagwa served as one of Zimbabwe\u2019s two vice presidents. From that position, he and his supporters, known as Team Lacoste, became embroiled in a bitter struggle with younger party members who coalesced around Secretary of Women\u2019s Affairs Grace Mugabe, wife of the president, and whose group was known as Generation 40, or G40.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nAs early as 2015, Mnangagwa began reaching out to opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai to discuss plans to implement a five-year transition government, in which both men would play a leading role. The unity government would compensate and \u201creintegrate\u201d dispossessed former owners of large-scale farms. Reuters obtained hundreds of internal documents from Zimbabwe\u2019s Central Intelligence Organization that revealed the plan. \u201cKey aspects of the transition planning described in the documents were corroborated by interviews with political, diplomatic and intelligence sources in Zimbabwe and South Africa,\u201d reports Reuters.
