  1. President hails first female PM: T&T coming of age

    In like a lamb
If the Ninth Parliament came in like a lion, the Tenth was ushered in yesterday like a lamb. Compared to its predecessor’s birth, which was extraordinarily stormy, yesterday’s beginning was dignified, tame even.

    Boos, applause for Patrick
In his first official engagement since the crushing defeat of the People’s National Movement (PNM) in the May 24 General Election Patrick Manning returned to the Parliament Chamber not as prime minister but just the Member of Parliament for San Fernando East.

    Parliament gets going
Yesterday’s opening of Parliament followed the traditional. There was in the House the usual election of Speaker and Deputy Speaker and the taking of oaths by the 41 members of the House. In the Senate there was the election of President and Deputy President and the swearing in of the thirty one members of the Senate. And of course the usual speech by President Maxwell Richards and the Regimental guard of honour (all women) assembled smartly outside the Red House on Abercromby Street.

Kamla at Parliament opening: Local Govt polls July 26
Eight weeks after a gruelling, hard-fought and financially costly general election campaign, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has plunged the country into another round of elections.

Kamla says back to the polls
Two months after the May 24 general election, T&T will return to the polls for local government elections on July 26, according to a declaration by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar at yesterday’s start of the parliamentary term.

    High expectations
AS the country has already noted on so many occasions in the intervening period since the general election on May 24, the 10th Parliament of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago which opened yesterday is hugely historic.

    Budget after local polls
FINANCE MINISTER Winston Dookeran yesterday disclosed he will present the 2011 Budget in Parliament after the July 26 Local Government Elections. This budget will be the first one for the People’s Partnership coalition since it assumed office after the May 24 General Election.

    Rowley: PNM will be ready
Opposition Leader Dr Keith Rowley says the People’s National Movement (PNM) will be ready for the local government election on July 26.

    ‘Uncle Jack! We love you!’
“Uncle Jack! You got dem in a corner!” was the shout that greeted Minister of Works and Transport Jack Warner on his arrival at Red House for the ceremonial opening of the Tenth Parliament yesterday.

  2. Govt MPs take up three benches in House
The 29-member People’s Partnership administration will occupy three benches in the Parliament from this afternoon’s first working session of the House of Representatives.

    Gopee-Scoon polls manager, dumps PNM
Long-standing PNM member Phillip Ragoonanan has shifted allegiance to the People’s Partnership and is working towards handing over the traditionally PNM-controlled Point Fortin Borough Corporation to the ruling party on July 26.

    Local Govt polls welcome
WE heartily applaud the decision by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar at the Opening of Parliament last Friday to call the long overdue Local Government Elections that had been cancelled each year for the past four years by the former PNM administration.
