I wish to take up where I left off last Sunday to examine the implication of the “Report of the Working Group of Experts on People of African Dissent on Its Mission to the United States” for Trinidad and Tobago since there is an assumption that these reports have no relevance to our society. Sometimes we even refuse to believe that the slave experience lies at the base of our society masking our origin under the umbrella of an illusionary multiculturalism.
Slavery touched Africans in a multiplicity of ways. Enslaved Africans were beaten mercilessly by their masters. When they complained to the magistrates about their ill-treatment, they were beaten for complaining. The female slaves were beaten because the masters could not control their tongues. Sir Ralph Abercromby, governor of the island (1813 to 1827), argued that “it required great patience to bear with the provoking tongue and noise of the women” (Anti-Slavery Monthly Reporter, November 1827).
In 1827, after an 1823 Order in Council prevented the whipping of enslaved women, the planters pleaded to resume the practice. They feared the women because they were the eminence grisse or the decision-makers behind much of the resistance against slavery.
In 1888 Canon Philip Douglin (1845-1902) outlined the psychological damage slavery did to Africans of T&T descent. He was born in Barbados but served in Rio Pongas, West Africa, as a missionary of the West Indian Church Association for the Furtherance of the Gospel for twenty years (1867-1887). In 1887, he came to Trinidad as rector of St. Clément’s Anglican Church.
On August 1, 1888, on the fiftieth anniversary of the emancipation of slavery, he offered a remarkable insight into the psychological implications of slavery on black people. He said: “There are secret agonies, known only to God, which are far more acute than any external torture. Oh! It is not the smiting of the back, until the earth is crimsoned with the streams of blood-it is not the pursuing of human beings with blood hounds-it is not the branding of the person, or the amputation of the limbs-it is not the killing of the body-it is not these that are the keenest sufferings that a people can undergo. These affect only the outward man and may leave the majestic mind untouched.”
He continued: “But those inflictions which tend to contract and destroy the mind-those cruelties which benumb the sensibilities of the soul-those influences which chill and arrest the currency of the heart’s affection-these are the awful instruments of real suffering and degradation; and these have been made to operate on the Negro” (“Jubilee of Emancipation,” San Fernando Gazette, August 11, 1888). Until then, no observer, anywhere in the world, had articulated slavery’s impact on the psychology of colonized people.
The Working Group of Experts acknowledges three important aspects of the problem. It says there is “a profound need to acknowledge that the transatlantic trade in Africans, enslavement, colonization and colonialism… were among the major sources and manifestations of racism, racial discrimination, Afrophobia, xenophobia and related intolerance.” Such a concern was implicit in Fitzgerald Hinds’ warning that a group of businessmen and former PNM ministers agreed that Dr. Rowley was too “dark-skinned” to become Prime Minister (Express, February 2014).
The report also called for the erection of monuments, memorials and markers “to facilitate public dialogue.” It says, education “must be accompanied by acts of reconciliation, to overcome acts of racial bigotry, and legacies of racial injustice” and the school curricula should reflect “appropriately the history of the transatlantic trade in Africans, enslavement and segregation.”
As a start, each UTT student should be required to take a year-long course on the history and culture of Trinidad and Tobago if s/he wishes to be considered an educated T&T citizen. Within that rubric, s/he should be taught the fundamental role Africans played in building this society.
People of African descent in T&T are faced with a conundrum: they see the PNM as being interchangeable with their fundamental group interest. But if PNM is “the rallying cry of all” as the party proclaims, can it advocate, in a serious way, the liberation of black people without alienating the other groups upon which it depends for its support?
Trinidad and Tobago is not a homogeneous black society in the way in which Jamaica or Haiti is, nor for that matter is the interest of black people necessarily coterminous with that of PNM or UNC. Who, then, is supposed to advocate black interest in T&T?
The Chinese, the Syrian and the Indians, to name three groups, know who advocates their causes. Can we identify who advocates for and makes similar claims for Afro-Trinbagonians?
The society should ponder this question if we wish to move forward, together.

Correct Doc. Prudent advocacy , as played out by a vibrant,fearless, socially conscious, Afro Middle class , willing to first work together ,in efforts to fight for / promote the interest of their own. It’s long overdue.

Underachieving , tribally fractured, classed fissured Trinidad and Tobago , can never evolve into that much envied, socio-economic – com political ,shining light , it can be , if one fraction of it’s people,continue – with few exceptions- to bring up the rear, in every aspect.
By extension, the region, and World at large , will likewise fail in achieving most of the much coveted ideals ,that were envisioned back in 1945 , upon creation of the UN , if again, one Race, continually ‘get’s the short end of de stick’ – be it from their own , or ‘the other,’ from without.

As one end game Doc, let’s together work in the hope of halting historical individual/ collective Trauma , amongst Global Africans.
Some across the globe was able to parlay Victimhood , into a win/ win enterprise , that helped drag their people, out of what appeared , as a never ending ,socio political quagmire.

Certainly it is a great idea for black advocacy groups all over the world. GOPIO has advocated for East Indians and functions as a connecting bridge to the Indian sub-continent. They are not a strong advocacy group but nevertheless as time goes on they can “morph” into one. The case of Fiji was indeed an example of a need for mediation and strong advocacy. Despite over 150 year presence in Fiji Indians were seen as outsiders denied the lands that they worked on, Chaudhry sought to change that and all hell broke lose. The reign of terror reminded Indians of their vulnerabilities, India did nothing for fear of aggravating the situation, similar to Nehru response to China’s invasion in the 1962 war where he told Indian soldiers to “stand down” for fear of a prolong conflict.
But back to the topic at hand. The African continues to suffer immensely in America. I was looking at a number of videos and saw white police abusing black men in the worst way, in one instance shooting a man on his back after telling him to run. A clear case of cold blooded murder. Obama has broken the record of commuting the sentences of 214 criminals. Many of them given very long sentences in American prison culture a world within a world the largest prison system in the Western world.
The need for advocacy for black folks in America is a necessity consider these statistic “According to the BJS non-Hispanic blacks accounted for 39.4% of the prison and jail population in 2009, while non-Hispanic whites were 34.2%, and Hispanics (of any race) 20.6%. The incarceration rate of black males was over six times higher than that of white males, with a rate of 4,749 per 100,000 US residents.[22][23][24]” A black man was sentenced to 40 years in prison for throwing hot water on his girlfriend gay son and lover. A white boy was sentence to 6 months in prison for raping a drunk woman. It was later reduced to 3 months probation because it would ruin his career. The justice system in America is anti black, herein is the need for watchdogs and advocacy groups to highlight these inequalities and demand change. A new generation must arise because evil don’t rest to replace to elderly civil rights leaders….

The time is here , for a vibrant Middle class to step up , and advocate for their own , as part of an overall strategy, to help elevate our society as a whole.

The need for a Global Negroe Movement, to unite my black brothers and sisters is badly needed. This is what the doc identified as a necessary step for strong advocacy. The Negroe has been disenfranchised from the economic wealth made to live paycheck to paycheck. In TNT, he was turned into a house Negroe where 75% of the civil servant jobs went to him under slick Willy. This killed the entrepreneurial skills of the Negroe and created a mass dependency syndrome. The doc is an exception to the rule he managed to escape the house Negroe massa mentality. But Neal unfortunately you are still lost in the past and are still living in the 50s. Social integration with 22% of the population with claiming mix heritage. They determine the future of the nation.
All is not lost there is still hope for a Global Negroe Movement to demand repatriation money for slavery. To advocate for more land, to challenge the government to provide better prison systems along with conjugal visits, to assist black youths and to steer them away from violence. I was driving along today and saw a 13 year old girl and a boy about the same age but he had the body of a grown man. He held tenderly from behind and wrapped his arms around her and they walked a slow grind he grinning and she enjoying the attention in true Africana tradition. Contraception may work but as you know Nealos these things do break. Yes the lil sister is going to grow up quickly with all that attention. And soon babies will be popping out! but sadly though, criminal elements , are within the ranks , thinking they can commit act of violence, or engage in ugly lifestyles/ nefarious activities,then run to Tobago , so as to hide on a 116 square miles , piece of real estate. Many have lost their lives, for the gun man world , has long hands.
Something tells me , that likewise ,many criminal elements , are running into law enforcement Organizations , naively believing that it can protect/ insulate them, from revengeful enemies, that lurks, with long standing, evil intent.
As a kid growing up, I’ve always learned, that it’s impossible to be Police , & Thief , all at the same time.
