The time to have gotten rid of the PNM was in 1976!! Raffique Shah's presence, as well as Basdeo Panday's, and the ULF HELPED to cement(!!!) them in the politics of T&T for 30 years and more!!!

As far as the NAR was concerned, when Shah saw them coalescing prior to 1986 as a viable force to defeat the PNM in 1986 (which they did), he was so upset, so JEALOUS, so full of HATRED, that he started spitting, in his newspaper articles on people in the NAR, WHO SERVED T&T WELL, BETTER THAN HE EVER DID, DURING AND WAY BEFORE HIS TIME!!!
Calling those people people whose,"...political career was stillborn," etc, because the kind of support the NAR got at that time was what HE wanted back in 1976 to get into government (i.e. win elections).
Remember, they (ULF) only got in Opposition (in 1976).

Basdeo Panday, the greatest ally the PNM ever had (said, and I agree, by another blogger...), OUTFOXED and (out)manouvred Raffique Shah into HELPING preserve the PNM in our midst: the result is a straight line from then to what you see, today, here, in T&T.
And NO amount of, "We wuz mon in de ULF and we stood up to Ponday," (as he continuously boasts about) is going to change that! Hero, my ass!!!

The 'hero' also talks about NAR 'mashing' up soon after, as if the ULF never did 'mash up,' a la, the Panday-Shah split after 1976.

So thank the 'hero' for festering the PNM on us!!!

Very well said Raf. After all these years people still believe that government is the answer to all their problems and look to them for solutions while governments experiment with their authority to serve the people they were elected to elevate from third to first world. The provision of materialism by itself may not help us towards a different realisation to remedy the many ills that befall us. In many ways we have fallen backwards such as education, literacy, health and human services. We need more than
a greater supply of cash to elevate us towards a new dispensation. We need to develop and collective convictions where people have a better understanding of how government should work and how the population should intervene when governments deviate from the promises they made before gaining power.
